Flavoparmelia caperata ( Common Greenshield Lichen )

Flavoparmelia caperata is a very common lichen species. So, common in face. That it’s common name includes the word common, and is know as the “common greenshield lichen”. It is widely distributed in North America. It has a foliose thallus that is yellow-green to olive-green in color. The upper surface of the thallus is smooth and shiny, while the lower surface is covered with small, white, hair-like structures called rhizines. The lobes of the thallus are broad and flat, with a wavy or irregular margin. It is often found growing on tree bark of both standing trees, and often will completely cover large areas of fallen branches.
