Scleroderma bovista (Potato Puffball)

This is small brown puffball that is very common in grassy areas or areas where soil is disturbed, like trail or garden edges and roadsides. They start out with smooth brown skin which may have some minor scaling. The insides may be white when very very young, but early on they will begin to turn purple and eventually purple black. These are not edible puffballs, despite looking much like a tiny potato.
