Ganoderma applanatum (Artists Conk)

This bracket fungus can get quite large, and has a soft pore surface that quickly bruises brown. It also is very hard like wood when dry. This makes it a fun mushroom to draw on, and display in your home. I’m sure many of you remember drawing on these as a child, or at the very least have seen a drawing done on one at some point in your life. In contrast to the pore surface, the top of the cap is very hard and somewhat shiny reminiscent of a turtle shell. The cap color is a mix of shades from white to brown. They can be found year round but the pore surface is fresh only in the summer months. It is a perennial mushroom and will grow larger, adding a new layer of pores every year.
